How long should an autobiography be? If it tells a whole life, 60,000 to 90,000 words. That is roughly 250 to 430 pages in a standard paperback, from 30 to 60 hours of talking. A book that tells part of a life can be far shorter: about 25,000 words and 120 pages, from 15 to 20 hours.

Those are the two sizes I write. Below is where they sit against real books you can buy in India, what publishers expect, and how to choose between a short book and a long one.
How long should an autobiography be, in words?
A full-length autobiography is usually 60,000 to 100,000 words, and writing guides put a trade memoir at 80,000 to 90,000.
The number follows the scope. A book that covers a whole life, from childhood to now, needs room for each decade. A book about one stretch of a life, or one theme, does not. If you are still working out which kind of book yours is, the difference between an autobiography, a memoir and a biography comes first, because a memoir is allowed to be shorter.
There is no rule that an autobiography has to reach a word count. Gandhi’s runs to more than 450 pages. The first edition of Abdul Kalam’s ran to 180 large pages.
How many pages is a memoir?
The full-length memoirs in the table below run 288 to 400 pages in a standard paperback, at about 210 to 240 words a page.
A listed page count is a poor guide. The same text prints to different lengths. Tara Westover’s Educated is 83,424 words, according to Reedsy’s word-count guide.
Penguin lists the UK Windmill paperback at 400 pages. Penguin Random House lists the US hardcover at 352 pages. That is 209 and 237 words a page for the same book.
I used that range to estimate the books below. Each page count is the publisher’s or a library’s listing for the named edition. Each word count is an estimate: listed pages multiplied by 210 and by 240. Listed pages can include front matter, photographs and notes, so treat every estimate as a rough upper bound.
| Book | Edition | Listed pages | Words (estimated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wings of Fire, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam with Arun Tiwari | Universities Press, paperback, 1999 | xvi + 180 (first edition; later printings run longer) | Not estimated: a large 25 cm page |
| Unfinished, Priyanka Chopra Jonas | Penguin India, paperback, 2024 | 288 | 60,000 to 69,000 |
| Climbing the Mango Trees, Madhur Jaffrey | Ebury Press, paperback, 2006 | 320 | 67,000 to 77,000 |
| Lone Fox Dancing, Ruskin Bond | Speaking Tiger, paperback | 328 | 69,000 to 79,000 |
| An Autobiography, or The Story of My Experiments with Truth, M.K. Gandhi, translated by Mahadev Desai | Navajivan, 2004 printing | xv + 471 | 99,000 to 113,000 (a small 18 cm page, so the roughest estimate here) |
| Educated, Tara Westover (for comparison) | Windmill paperback / Random House US hardcover | 400 / 352 | 83,424 (counted, not estimated) |
Most of these sit between 60,000 and 80,000 words, a little under the trade norm in the next section.

What length do publishers and agents expect?
Publishers and literary agents expect a memoir of about 80,000 to 90,000 words.
Reedsy’s guide, updated for 2026, puts memoirs at 80,000 to 90,000 words. Chuck Sambuchino, writing in Writer’s Digest in October 2016, gives the same target: 80,000 to 89,999. He says 70,000 to 79,000 is no bad thing, and puts the high end at 99,999.
Those numbers are for a book that has to win over an agent and then sell in shops. A family book printed for the people who love you does not have to meet them. It has to be the right length for the story it tells.
How many hours of talking make an autobiography?
For the books I write, a whole-life autobiography takes 30 to 60 hours of interviews, and a book of twelve stories takes 15 to 20.
| The gift book | The full book | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | About 25,000 words | 60,000 to 90,000 words |

| Interviews | 15 to 20 hours, in 90-minute sessions | 30 to 60 hours with the subject, plus family, partners and colleagues as needed |
| Time | Four months from the first session to delivery | One book over six months |

The full details are on the gift book page and on what the full book costs.
The hours are not padding. A voice is caught across many conversations, as I wrote on will it sound like me, because people show different sides of themselves on different days.
From the desk: twelve stories or the whole life
Choose the short book when you want the stories caught, and the long book when you want the whole life accounted for.
On the gift book page I put it this way: “Twenty hours cannot hold eighty years. It can hold twelve stories.” The same page says why the short book exists: 80,000 words is too much book for most families who write to me about a parent. A short book that tries to cover a whole life reads thin. A short book that picks twelve moments and tells each one in full reads like the person.
The long book is for a life that needs its decades in order: a founder whose company and family grew up together, or someone whose story crosses three countries. It needs the archive work and the extra hours.
A long book still needs cuts. On the write my life story page I say that the two years you find most important are usually the two years a reader skips. A longer book makes room for more of what a reader needs. What you love still gets cut.
How long does it take to write an autobiography?
With me, four months for the short book and six for the full one. On your own, budget the better part of a year.
The gift book runs four months from the first session to the box of hardbacks. The full book runs over six months, and I take one book at a time. If you write it yourself, the honest version of that choice is that a serious memoir means protecting the time week after week, for the better part of a year.

What is the average memoir word count?
The median memoir on Reedsy’s marketplace was 55,500 words in 2024, by Reedsy’s own figures. Those are books people finished. The target for a memoir sold through a publisher is higher, at 80,000 to 90,000 words. The Indian and diaspora memoirs in the table above mostly come in at an estimated 60,000 to 80,000.
Can an autobiography be 100 pages?
Yes, and shorter books work better than most people expect. The gift book I write is around 120 pages with photographs. A short book works when it does not pretend to cover every year.
How many pages is 60,000 words?
About 250 to 290 pages in a standard paperback, at 210 to 240 words a page. A larger page, smaller type or fewer photographs will bring that down.
Is a longer autobiography better?
No. The right length is the one the story needs. Writer’s Digest puts the high end for a memoir at 99,999 words, and a family book only has to hold the stories it was made for.
