How Much Does a Ghostwriter Cost?
Published rates, band by band, from $59 to $250,000. Including the Indian market, which most cost guides leave out.
Ghostwriting a full-length book costs between $1,500 and $250,000. That range is useless to you, so this page breaks it into five bands, names the companies inside each one, and quotes their own published numbers. Updated August 2026.
Every figure below comes from the seller’s own page or from Reedsy’s marketplace data. Nothing here is an estimate I invented.
The five bands, with real numbers
| Band | Published price | Who is in it | Who writes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory apps | From $59 a year | Storyworth, Remento | You do. The app sends questions and binds the answers. |
| Indian volume shops | Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 a book | Ghostwriter.in, Estorytellers, Write Right | An assigned writer from a roster, often supervised, rarely named to you. |
| Packaged memoir services | $3,250 to $24,000 | StoryTerrace | A writer matched from a large pool. You do not choose the pool. |
| Marketplaces | $18,000 to $50,000 for nonfiction | Reedsy | A freelancer you pick, after quoting several. |
| Agencies and named solos | $50,000 to $250,000 | Kevin Anderson & Associates, Gotham, solo authors | A senior writer, or with agencies, a writer you meet after you sign. |
Band one: $59 a year
Storyworth starts at $59. It emails your father a question every week for a year, collects his answers, and prints them as a hardcover. Remento does the same with voice.
This is a good product and I say so on the record. If your father will write, buy it today. It costs less than dinner and your family gets something real.
What it will not do is make a book a stranger would read. Fifty-two answers to fifty-two questions is a transcript in a nice binding. There is no shape, no arc, no sense of what the life was actually about. The questions are the same ones every other family gets. And it depends entirely on your father sitting down every week for a year, which is the assumption that breaks.
Band two: Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000
The Indian market is where most NRI families start looking, and most cost guides written in New York pretend it does not exist.
Ghostwriter.in, the writing arm of Power Publishers, publishes its biography rates openly: Rs 50,000 for a 100-page book of 25,000 words, Rs 75,000 for 150 pages, Rs 1,00,000 for 200 pages. Interviews are charged separately at Rs 10,000 for the first ten and Rs 1,000 for each one after. That works out near Rs 2 a word. Estorytellers, Write Right and Rolling Authors sit in the same territory, some with lower rates and no published numbers at all.
Rs 1,00,000 is about $1,150. For a 50,000-word book that is a rate no writer can live on while doing the work properly, which tells you how the work is done. Volume. A roster. A brief passed to whoever is free. Ask three questions before you pay anyone in this band and the picture usually clarifies: who exactly writes it, will I speak to them directly, and can I see three books they wrote themselves.
Some of these shops produce decent, honest books, and the founder-led ones are the safer bet inside the band. Pinaki Ghosh at Ghostwriter.in has been doing this longer than almost anyone in India and says he writes or supervises most of the biographies himself. What you are buying at Rs 2 a word is competence at speed. What you are not buying is a writer with the room to sit with your life for six months.
Band three: $3,250 to $24,000
StoryTerrace publishes its packages. The Classic book is $650 a month for five months, $3,250 all in, and gives you 60 to 120 pages from four to ten hours of interviews. The PRO book is $4,800 a month, $24,000 all in, from 125 pages and ten hours up. A Tailored book is quoted on request.
This is a real service and the books look good. The model is a writer pool of several hundred, and you get matched. Matching is the whole risk. The writer who is free in your window may be excellent and may be adequate, and you find out on the draft.
Band four: $18,000 to $50,000
Reedsy is a marketplace of vetted freelancers, and it publishes the best data in this industry because it sees the transactions. Reedsy’s 2026 numbers: $18,000 to $50,000 for a nonfiction book, $3,500 to $18,000 for a novel. The average price for ghostwriting an 80,000-word book on the marketplace is $32,800. Top writers there ask $50,000 to $100,000.
Reedsy is where I send people who want to run the process themselves. You request quotes from up to five writers, compare, and manage the engagement. The vetting is real. The project management is yours.
Band five: $50,000 to $250,000
Kevin Anderson & Associates publishes its packages: $57,500 to $95,000 for a senior editor and professional writer, $115,000 to $250,000 for an executive editor with a widely published writer. In the UK, £40,000 to £75,000 rising to £85,000 to £165,000. Gotham Ghostwriters brokers into the same band. Named solo authors like Jerry Payne charge a flat $45,000 and publish it.
At this level you are buying a writer who has done it before and a manuscript a publisher would take. With the agencies you are also buying a layer: the person who sells you the book is not the person who writes it, and you meet the writer after the contract. With a named solo you are buying the person on the page. That difference is the one thing to be clear about before you sign anything above $50,000.
What actually moves the price
Length
A single defining chapter is not a four-generation family history. Word count is the crudest driver and the first question anyone asks.
Interviews
Thirty hours with a founder who remembers everything costs less than sixty hours with four siblings who remember it differently.
Research
A life reconstructed from company records, court filings, ship manifests and letters in a language you do not read is a different job from a life told to you across a table.
Who writes it
The single largest variable, and the one most agencies price without disclosing. A named author writing it himself cannot be cheap. He only has so many books left in him.
Sensitivity
A partition story, an estrangement, a business dispute still in court. These take judgment, and judgment is slow.
Design and print
A manuscript is not a book on a table. Photo restoration, layout, archival printing and shipping to three continents add up separately.
Where I sit, and why
Defined engagements start at $2,500. Full memoirs and authorised biographies are scoped after a first conversation, and they sit in band five, not band two. I write them myself, one at a time.
I will say the uncomfortable part plainly. In dollars I cost many times what an Indian shop charges and less than a New York agency. The reason is not geography. It is that a book takes six to twelve months of one writer’s attention, and I take one at a time. There is no roster behind me to spread the cost across.
The honest gap in my own offer: I cannot do it fast. If you need a book in eight weeks for a launch, hire a shop or an agency with a bench. I would rather tell you that now than take the deposit.
The cheapest way to find out what your book costs is a first conversation, which is free. Ask what your book would cost See how I price
The one number nobody quotes
The cost of not doing it is zero today and total later. The man who can tell you why he really left, what the first winter cost him, who he wrote to and who he never spoke to again, is here now. After that the story can only be built from the outside, from documents and second-hand memory. It can never again be told from the inside.
That is the real price comparison. Not $3,250 against $32,800.
Questions people ask about cost
What is the average cost of a ghostwriter for a book?
Reedsy’s marketplace average for an 80,000-word book is $32,800. Reedsy’s 2026 range for nonfiction is $18,000 to $50,000. Agencies publish $57,500 to $250,000. Indian shops publish Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000. There is no single average because there are five different products being sold under one word.
Why do ghostwriters cost so much?
A full-length book is six to twelve months of one person’s working life. At $32,800 for an 80,000-word book taking eight months, the writer is earning less than a mid-level salary before tax, and that is at the marketplace average. Any price far below that band is being paid for by volume, by juniors, or by cutting the interviews.
How much does a memoir ghostwriter cost in India?
Published Indian rates run Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 for a 25,000 to 50,000-word book, roughly Rs 2 a word, with interviews billed separately. Named Indian writers working one client at a time price internationally, in the $25,000 and up band, because the work takes the same year it takes anywhere else.
Is a cheap ghostwriter ever worth it?
Yes, in two cases. A short commemorative book for private family circulation where competence is enough. And a first attempt where you want to find out whether the material is there. It is not worth it when the book carries your name into the world, or when it is the only record of a parent who will not be here to correct it.
How do ghostwriters charge, per word or per project?
Marketplaces and Indian shops mostly charge per word. Agencies and named solos charge per project or per phase. Per word rewards length, which is the wrong incentive for a memoir. The best books are the ones where somebody cut two hundred pages.
Should I pay the whole fee upfront?
No. Pay in phases tied to deliverables, and start with a paid sample before any full commitment. The scam pattern in this industry is a large deposit followed by a writer you never speak to. A phased structure makes that impossible to hide.
What is a paid sample chapter and what should it cost?
A small paid engagement where the writer takes your material and produces a section in your voice, so you can judge the voice before committing to a book. Every serious writer offers one. It is the single most useful few thousand dollars you will spend, because voice is the thing portfolios cannot show you.
Does the price include publishing?
Usually not. Ghostwriting is the manuscript. Design, print, ISBN, distribution and any publisher submission are separate and should be quoted separately. Ask for that split in writing before you sign.
