Storyworth alternatives for Indian families: an honest comparison

The best Storyworth alternatives for Indian families are the ones that work in your parent’s language and reach your parent’s address. Alfaaz takes WhatsApp voice notes in eight Indian languages. Memoir Tale is Indian, written by people, from ₹24,999. Storyworth itself takes Hindi only on phone calls, on its two higher plans.

Every figure below comes from the seller’s own pages, read on 19 October 2026. Prices change, so check at checkout. None of these companies pays me anything, and I sell something different, which I say plainly near the end.

What should an Indian family look for in a Storyworth alternative?

Four questions decide it, and price is usually the least of them.

  1. Language. Will your mother answer in the language she thinks in? Hindi is common on these apps. Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil and Bengali are rare.
  2. Voice, not typing. Many parents won’t type an answer a week for a year. Can they speak it, on a phone call or a WhatsApp voice note?
  3. Delivery. Does the printed book reach an address in India or the UAE, and does the seller say what that costs?
  4. Who writes. Your parent, an AI, or a person. That decides what the book reads like.

For a family in Lucknow or a son in Dubai, the answers are different from an American family’s.

Which Storyworth alternatives work in Hindi, Punjabi or Gujarati?

Alfaaz is the only one here that lists Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi and Telugu by name. It works from one main language per parent.

Hindi is easier to find. Memoirji, Tell Mel and Memoir Tale all list it. Storyworth’s help centre lists Hindi for its Story Calls feature, which comes with the Color and Unlimited plans, not Basic. Its other voice features run in English, and Spanish for family calls. Storyworth lists no other Indian language for recordings.

The printed script is the question almost nobody answers. Storyworth’s help centre says printing supports “most languages” and lists the ones it can’t print yet; Hindi isn’t on that list, but Devanagari printing isn’t stated either. Alfaaz and Memoirji don’t say what script the book comes in. If your father answers in Hindi and you want the book in Hindi, email the seller and ask before you pay.

Which ones ship a printed book to India or the UAE?

Ask this before anything else, because some don’t ship there at all.

  • Storyworth lists India and the UAE in its shipping calculator but shows no figure. Books print in the US and Europe, and its FAQ says the recipient may pay customs.
  • Remento ships to 32 countries, listed on its help page: the US, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. India and the UAE aren’t listed.
  • Meminto prints “worldwide”, with shipping from US$8.99 depending on the country.
  • DearStory names India and “worldwide”, printed by regional partners.
  • Memoir Tale says it delivers across India and internationally.
  • Alfaaz and Memoirji don’t say where they ship.
  • Tell Mel keeps the memoir online, with no printed book.

If a seller ships to India but not the UAE, one route is to send the book to your parents’ home and carry copies back after a visit.

Is there a free way to do it?

Yes, if someone in the family will do the sitting, the recording and the typing.

Record your parent on a phone, a question at a time. The 100 questions to ask your parents are in an order that works, and interviewing your parents from another country covers doing it over a video call.

Transcription is where language bites. Google’s Recorder app transcribes Hindi live on Pixel 6 and later phones, and can re-transcribe in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Marathi. Google’s help page lists no Gujarati, Punjabi or Urdu. Apple’s Voice Memos transcription lists no Indian language. So for a Punjabi-speaking father, the recording is free and the typing is yours.

Printed fill-in journals in Hindi and Gujarati are sold on Amazon.in for under ₹900. They suit a parent who likes to write by hand.

From the desk

I have said this before about Storyworth on what a ghostwriter costs, and it holds for every option above: “This is a good product and I say so on the record. If your father will write, buy it today.”

Most of these products are good at what they set out to do. A question goes out, an answer comes back, and a book arrives with your father’s words in it. That is worth having.

What I sell is a different job. On my heirloom-book page I put it this way: somebody has to talk to six people separately, notice that two of them describe the same year differently, and decide which twelve photographs out of four hundred go in. No prompt does that. If you want that, it costs more. If you don’t, the products above will serve you well.

Which Storyworth alternative should an Indian family choose?

Match the option to the parent, not to the price.

My own gift book is in that last row: 10 to 12 stories, about 25,000 words, from 15 to 20 hours of interviews in whatever mix of English, Hindi and Punjabi your parent thinks in. It starts at US$5,000 and typically goes up to US$10,000. It is a different budget from everything in the first five rows.

Questions people ask

Does Storyworth work in Hindi?

Partly. Storyworth’s help centre lists Hindi for Story Calls, the phone-recording feature on its Color and Unlimited plans. Typed answers can be in any language, but Storyworth doesn’t state that the book prints in Devanagari, so ask before you buy.

Does Storyworth ship to India?

India and the UAE both appear in Storyworth’s shipping calculator, but it showed no cost when I checked on 19 October 2026. Books are printed in the US and Europe, and Storyworth’s FAQ says the recipient may have to pay customs.

Is there an Indian alternative to Storyworth?

Memoir Tale is an Indian company that prices in rupees, from ₹24,999, with human writers working in Hindi, English and Hinglish. DearStory, also Indian, makes shorter illustrated books from ₹2,799. Alfaaz is built for Indian families, though it is based in Amsterdam and prices in dollars.

What if my parent won’t type?

Choose an option where they speak: Alfaaz and Memoirji take WhatsApp voice notes, and Storyworth’s higher plans, Meminto and Tell Mel take phone calls. Or record them yourself on a phone.

If you’d like to hear what your parent sounds like on a page before choosing anything, A Page in Your Voice takes a five-minute recording and returns one page in their voice within a week, for US$1,000, credited against a book.
