A gift for the 60th, the 70th and the 80th: what to give Indian parents

A gift for the 60th, the 70th and the 80th

At eighty years and ten months, your father has seen a thousand full moons. Ask him about twelve of them, and print the answers.

Sources for the three ceremonies are linked on the line and were read in full on 17 September 2026. They are thin: two Wikipedia articles, two puja-service pages and a wedding-venue guide. Where families differ from the sources, the family is right.

One thousand full moons take 29,530 days. That is eighty years and ten months, and Hindu families who keep the custom mark it with a ceremony called Sahasra Chandra Darshan. The parents sit in the middle. The whole family turns up to look at two people who have lasted.

Then everybody goes home, and the gift is a silver plate.

I write life stories for a living, so I am biased about what belongs on that table. Here is the case anyway.

The three ceremonies, and who performs them

Age Ceremony What it marks
60 Shashti Poorthi, also written Shashtiabdapurti and Sashtiapthapoorthi The completion of sixty years, with the couple going through a wedding ceremony a second time. Wikipedia describes it that way. A Chennai venue’s guide says it is held in the 61st year and that children see it as their parents’ second wedding.
70 Bhima Ratha Shanti Entering the 70th year, with the marriage vows renewed. The puja service SmartPuja says the children perform it for their parents as a gesture of gratitude.
80 and ten months Sahasra Chandra Darshan, also called Sathabhishekam A thousand full moons seen. Wikipedia gives the count as 29,530 days and places the ceremony three full moons before the 81st birthday.

Read the 70th row again. The children perform it for their parents, as gratitude. The custom already says what this page is trying to say. At sixty, seventy and eighty, the children owe the parents an occasion.

Your family may keep none of these. A 70th birthday in Leicester, a 50th anniversary in Dubai and a retirement lunch in Pune do the same job. The relatives fly in, somebody gives a speech, and the person at the centre of it is asked nothing.

Why a book fits these days

The guest list is the source list

The 80th is the last time his brother, his college friend and his first business partner will be in one room. Put a phone on the table and record them for ten minutes each. That is a chapter nobody could write next year.

It gives the day a centre

A book handed over in front of the family gets read aloud. Somebody opens to the page about the scooter, and the uncle who sold him the scooter is sitting right there.

Everybody can take one home

Ten hardbacks from Pothi cost under ₹2,500 before shipping. Every sibling, every grandchild, the cousin in Toronto. A silver plate goes into one cupboard.

The asking is the gift

The sessions take fifteen hours across a few months. For those months, one child calls every Sunday to ask about his life. The sessions are the present. The book is the receipt.

When to start, counting back from the day

Route Start this long before the date What is on the table on the day
Do it yourself Seven months A printed book you wrote
The gift book, US$10,000 Five months Ten hardbacks, about 120 pages
The full book, US$25,000 Twelve months The whole life, 60,000 to 90,000 words
Under eight weeks Today A card that says the first session is next Sunday

The last row is a real gift. “I am going to spend this year asking you about your life” beats a watch, and it costs a Sunday.

At 60, write the marriage

Shashti Poorthi is a second wedding, so the book for it is the first one. How the proposal came. Who said what about whose family. The first kitchen. Interview them apart, because you will get two weddings, and print both. The ten marriage questions are the place to start, and the two-parent book is the long form.

Sixty is also the easy age. They are sharp, they are busy, and they will tell you it is too early. Record them now. The 80th-birthday book is better when the 60-year-old version of the story is on tape.

At 70, write the work

By seventy the career is over and far enough away to talk about. The bad year. The partner who left. The risk not taken. A father who would not discuss the business at sixty will walk you through the ledger at seventy.

At 80, write the people before them

At eighty your parent is the last person who can name the faces in the oldest photographs. Put the albums on the table before anything else. Names first, stories second. I push families to start this one a full year ahead, in sessions of ninety minutes, in the morning.

Questions people ask

What is a good gift for parents on Shashti Poorthi?

A book about their marriage. The ceremony is a second wedding, so the gift that fits is the story of the first one, told by each of them apart and printed together. Start five to seven months before the date.

What is Sahasra Chandra Darshan?

A ceremony for a person who has seen a thousand full moons, which takes 29,530 days, or about eighty years and ten months. The sources I could read are thin and families vary, so ask the oldest person in yours how it is done.

What do you give a parent who has everything on an 80th birthday?

Your attention, on a schedule. Ninety minutes every Sunday asking about their life, recorded, and a book at the end. It cannot be returned and nobody else can give it.

How far ahead should we start a book for a milestone birthday?

Seven months if you are writing it yourself. Five months for the gift book. Twelve for a full biography. Under three months, record the interviews, bind one chapter, and let the book follow.

Can the book be a surprise?

The decision can be. The interviews cannot, because your parent has to sit for them. Announce it on an earlier occasion and deliver it on the big one.

A thousand full moons. Ask about twelve.

Send me the date and the age. I will count back and tell you which route still fits. I reply within 48 hours.
